BREAKING: Okonjo-Iweala becomes new DG of WTO

  Former Minister of Finance, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has been elected Director General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO). In the final two-man race, she polled 104 votes from 164 member countries to defeat South Korea’s Trade Minister. The body is expected to announce her as the new DG by 3pm Nigerian time. She becomes the first African to head the WTO.

Return vaccines from Isolation centres — FG tells looters

The Federal government has appealed to those who looted medical storage facilities and isolation centres across the country to return all the vaccines and consumables they had carted away. The government urged state governments not also to shut down their isolation centres, pointing out the need to be at alert in case of a resurgence of the pandemic. BREAKING: Buhari to address Nigerians at 7pm

  The President Muhammadu Buhari will address the security situation in the country by 7pm.   The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, disclosed this in a statement titled, ‘President Buhari addresses the nation.’   The statement read, “Following detailed briefing by security chiefs on the current situation in the country, President Muhammadu Buhari will make a national broadcast Thursday, October 22, 2020 at 7pm.   “Television, radio and other electronic media outlets are enjoined to hook up to the network services of the Nigerian Television Authority and Radio Nigeria respectively for the broadcast.”  

#EndSARS: 4 feared dead as hoodlums burn police station in Abuja

Four persons have been reportedly dead as hoodlums set ablaze Dutse Makaranta Police Station, Kubwa, Abuja.   According to an eyewitness who spoke to Supreme Corner Blog, the station was set ablaze after a clash between security operatives and hoodlums on Tuesday, October 20.   The eyewitness said that the outrage started from Sokale junction in Dutse to where the police station is located and four persons have been confirmed dead, adding that a police officer was rumoured dead.   This has caused unrest to traders and residents of the area.   Earlier, the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, ordered the deployment of riot policemen nationwide to protect lives and property.   The IG also deployed police operatives to strengthen security around custodial facilities nationwide.   A statement on Tuesday, by the force spokesman, DCP Frank Mba, titled, ‘Attacks on police facilities, others: IG orders deployment of anti-riot police officers,’ explained that 12

#EndSARS: IGP bans checking of Nigerians’ phones, vehicles, others

  Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, has ordered police officers to stop checking citizens’ phones. For years, operatives had insisted on searching phones of Nigerians youths at checkpoints or any location. During such encounters at roadblocks or patrols, policemen, in most cases, forcefully snatch phones belonging to innocent citizens. They search through e-mails, text messages, as well as chats on WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. The victim is then “billed” an amount to secure the release of the gadget. Any claim of right or refusal to pay could lead to severe beating, seizure of the phone – or both.   Bishop of The Potter's House, a non-denominational American megachurch,  Bishop T. D. Jakes, has reacted to the #EndSARS protest in Nigeria. The protest has continued after the disbandment of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad by the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu. In a tweet on Tuesday, October 13, the cleric wrote, ‘’Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere... World Food Day: Nigeria now Africa’s largest producer of rice, set for milk importation ban -FG

    Nneka Nwogwugwu, Abuja As the global community gears up to mark 2020 World Food Day, the Nigerian government while highlighting its major breakthrough in the Agricultural sector, has stated that Nigeria   is now the largest producer of rice in Africa. Speaking to newsmen in a briefing towards the celebration of World Food Day on Tuesday, October 13, the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Sabo Nanono also added that the county is set to ban milk importation in the next two years. Nanono said that the government has made enough provision of cows which will help enhance the plan for the ban on milk importation. While addressing newsmen, he also said that the agric ministry has raised her national food reserve stock to 109,657 a figure expected to be further increased to 219,900 MT by the end of 2020. The Police dissolved SARS after intense protests from Nigerians and other well meaning persons from the global community. In a statement by the Force Public Relations Officer, Frank Mba, on Sunday, October 11, the Inspector General of Police dissolved SARS across the 36 state commands and the Federal Capital Territory with Immediate effect. Other things to know about the dissolution of SARS in the statement are; All officers and men serving in the Unit will be redeployed to other Police Commands, Formations and Units. A new policing arrangement for tackling the offences of Armed -Robbery and other violent crimes will be unveiled to the public soon.   The Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, has announced the disbandment of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad of the Nigeria Police Force. Adamu announced this in a live broadcast on Sunday, October 11.
