FG reduces fees for conduct of statutory marriages

The Federal government has reviewed fees for the conduct of statutory marriages in Nigeria. The Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, approved the recommendation of stakeholders at the sensitization conferences across the country in the third quarter of 2019 for the downward review of fees. In a statement signed by the Permanent Secretary/principal Registrar of marriages in Nigeria, Georgina Ehuriah, released on the Twitter handle of the Ministry on Tuesday, the new fees were to take effect from July 1, 2020. The fees for fresh marriage license to a place of public worship was reduced from N30,000(2 years) to 6,000 (per year).   Read statement below;  

Npower: Humanitarian Minister bids Batch A, B farewell in appreciation speech

The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, Sadiya Umar Farouq has penned a message of gratitude to Batches A and B beneficiaries of Npower, a socio-investment programme of the Federal government. In a statement released on her twitter handle, she expressed gratitude to the beneficiaries and congratulated about 109,823 beneficiaries of Batch A and B for using the opportunity to set up businesses in their communities. She noted that the transitioning and exit of batch A and B which begins today, June 30 and terminates July 31 is not a punitive action. Events have occurred for the past week that have trended and also attracted a lot of reactions from Nigerians. First, was the death of former governor of Oyo state, Abiola Ajimobi , who died at 70 after battling with dreadful coronavirus disease. Covid-19: Delta governor, wife self-isolate after daughter test positive

Governor of Delta State, Ifeanyi Okowa and his wife, Edith have started 14 days self-isolation after their daughter tested positive for coronavirus.   The Governor made the announcement on his official Twitter handle on Friday.   Okowa tweeted: “Earlier today, Edith and I received the news that one of our daughters has tested positive for #COVID19.   “Hence, in-line with the laid out procedures, we are both going into isolation for the next 14-days”.   Two members of the Delta Executive Council, the Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Chiedu Ebie and Commissioner for Information, Charles Aniagwu, tested positive for the virus last weekend.   They are receiving treatment at an isolation in the state according to a statement by the Chief Press Secretary to Governor, Mr. Olisa Ifeajika.

Family postpones Ajimobi’s burial

  The burial of former Oyo Governor, Sen. Abiola Ajimobi, has been postponed At his Oluyole Ibadan residence on Friday morning, his spokesman, Bolaji Tunji, told reporters that the family would soon make an announcement of the burial programme.   Tunji said: “The funeral arrangements will be announced soon by the family but it will be observed privately so as to be in accordance with the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) guidelines.”   Ajimobi died in a private hospital in Lagos on Thursday at 70.

Lightning kills 33 persons in India

  At least 33 people were killed on Thursday by lightning strikes as heavy monsoon storms swept India’s North-Eastern states of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, officials said. According to Umesh Singh, an official at the Disaster Management Control Room in state capital Patna, 28 people were killed across various districts in Bihar.   Several others were injured as high-speed winds and rains felled trees and electricity poles and brought down thatched homes and temporary structures.   “The deaths have been reported just as the monsoon arrived in Bihar and neighbouring regions. The victims were mostly farmers or the homeless who were outdoors.   “The injured were rushed to the hospital and undergoing treatment,“Singh said.   Singh added that five additional deaths were reported in similar circumstances in two districts of neighbouring Uttar Pradesh.   However, the death toll from the heavy storms was likely to increase, as officials were collecting details of damage fro

Ghana to rebuild demolished Nigerian embassy

The Ghanaian government has promised to rebuild the Nigerian embassy in Accra, demolished last weekend by alleged private aggressors.   The country apologised again to the government and people of Nigeria over the demolition of part of its residential embassy building, stressing that Ghana-Nigeria relations was very cordial as it predates the independence of both countries.   A statement issued by Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey on Thursday, affirmed that the government was not taking lightly the demolition which was a breach of the Vienna Convention.   “Articles 22 and 30 of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations stipulate that the premises of the Mission as well as the private residence of a diplomatic agent shall be inviolable.   “Thus, the incident of Friday, 19th June, 2020 constitutes a breach of the convention,” she said.   She disclosed that the Ghanaian government was taking all measures to me

Immediate past Oyo Governor Abiola Ajimobi is dead. He was said to have died of COVID-19 complications at First Cardiology Specialist Hospital, Lagos. He was 70. The 70-year-old, who had been on a life support machine since last Friday at First Cardiology Hospital in Ikoyi, Lagos, after slipping into a coma following Coronavirus complications, finally died on Thursday, according to findings by SaharaReporters. According to Sahara reporters,  a source close to the ex-governor disclosed that  Ajimobi had been on life support machine after he slipped into a deep coma and may not make any recovery going by the observations of medical experts around him.   The Nasarawa State Command of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has arrested a man for allegedly raping a 3-month-old baby in Adogi village of Nasarawa State. Kenneth Imasuagbon Governor Godwin Obaseki’s only contender for the governorship ticket of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State, Kenneth Imasuagbon, has finally stepped down. Obaseki and Imasuagbon met in the early hours of Thursday in Government House, Benin behind closed doors. The coronavirus is being worshipped as a goddess in parts of India, as Indian media reports that believers are leaving offerings to the new deity, “Corona Mai.” Women in some villages in India’s Uttar Pradesh have started worshipping “Corona Mai,” Indian news agency IANS reported Monday. The women dug a pit in a field and filled it with water then offered nine cloves and nine laddoos, an Indian sweet, to their deity, IANS said. One of the richest oil magnates in the country, Chief Anthony Enukeme, is dead.   He was 75.   The Chief Executive of Tonimas Oil and gas group, died Monday night, after a brief illness. President John Magufuli of Tanzania on Monday June 8, declared the East African country “coronavirus-free”. The President who attributed the claimed success over the worldwide pandemic to prayers and fasting that the people of Tanzania offered to God, also commended the priest and worshippers for not wearing gloves and masks to protect themselves from the virus. Reps threaten AGF with warrant of arrest for failing to defend amount spent on COVID-19 pandemic response

The House of Representatives Committee on Public Account (PAC) has threatened to issue a warrant of arrest on the Accountant-General of the Federation (AGF) Mr Ahmed Idris. The Chairman of the Committee, Rep. Wole Oke (PDP-Osun), issued the threat over the  failure of the AGF to appear before the committee to defend the amount spent on COVID-19 pandemic response before  an investigative hearing. The investigative hearing, which sat on Monday in Abuja, was on funds so far spent on the pandemic.
