Resident Doctors to embark on strike over non-payment of COVID-19 Allowance

The National Association of Resident Doctors on Saturday issued a 14-day ultimatum to the government to address some of their pending demands, including the non-payment of COVID-19 inducement allowances. President of National Association of Resident Doctors, Aliyu Sokomba If the demands are not met by the end of the ultimatum, the doctor’s union threatened to embark on an industrial strike. The doctors issued the warning at a press briefing in Bauchi after the 40th ordinary general meeting of the association. One of their demands is the payment of “the recent COVID-19 inducement allowance that was widely speculated to have been paid to Doctors and other health workers,” President of the Association, Aliyu Sokomba, said. President Donald Trump has been openly critical of the international body for weeks over what he believes was an inadequate response to the outbreak of coronavirus in the Chinese province of Wuhan last year. Speaking during a White House address on Friday, he claimed that Chinese officials had “ignored” reporting obligations to WHO and pressured the organisation to to mislead the public about Covid-19. The virus has caused the deaths of more than 100,000 people in the US. “We have detailed the reforms that it must make and engaged with them directly, but they have refused to act,” President Trump said. “Because they have failed to make the requested and greatly needed reforms, we will be today terminating the relationship.” The US is the largest source of financial support for WHO, which is expected to be severely damaged by the withdrawal of funding. Senator Dino Melaye has confirmed that reports of coronavirus in Kogi are real and authentic. Melaye, in a statement on Saturday, affirmed one of the cases is from Kabba and the patient personally known to him. The statement reads: “I want to announce that the Covid-19 case in Kogi is real and authentic and cannot understand why any responsible government will want to deny and invariably kill her citizens. “One of the cases is from Kabba and the victim is personally known to me. I cannot be part of those who will play politics with the lives of my people. “COVID-19 is real but not a death sentence, if handled early enough. Family members of the Kabba victim who got referral to Abuja from Federal Medical Center in Lokoja and all those who had contact with him should please surrender themselves for test so as to curtail the spread.

World oldest man Bob Weighton dies aged 112

World recognized oldest man, Bod Weighton died on Thursday at the age of 112, his family confirmed in a statement. Bob Weighton, a former teacher and engineer from the central English county Hampshire, died “peacefully” in his sleep at home on Thursday morning, they said. Weighton took up the title of the oldest man in the world in February after the death of the previous holder, Chitetsu Watanabe of Japan. “With great sadness, the Weighton family announces the death of our beloved Bob Weighton,” relatives said in a statement to Britain’s domestic Press Association newswire. “A role model to us all, he lived his life interested in and engaged with all kinds of people from across the world. “He had many, many friendships and read and talked politics, theology, ecology and more, right up until his death. “He also cared greatly for the environment.” The family said they were grateful that Weighton had remained witty, kind, knowledgeable and a conversationalist “until

New video shows three Minneapolis officers kneeling on George Floyd before he died

A new video shared online appears to show three Minneapolis Police Department officers kneeling on George Floyd during his arrest on Monday, which later led to his death. Recall, a previous video posted by eyewitness Darnella Frazier showed Floyd, 46, being knelt on by one officer, Derek Chauvin, who has now been arrested and charged with George Floyd's murder.  In this new video, which was captured from the other side of the Minneapolis police vehicle where the arrest occurred, Chauvin and two other white officers were filmed kneeling on Floyd. Chauvin was taken into custody on Friday afternoon, according to the Minnesota Department of Public Safety. He faces charges of third-degree murder and manslaughter, according to Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman. Expect 11,000 MW of electricity by 2023 — Lai Mohammed

Lai Mohammed, the Minister of Information and Culture has told Nigerians to expect 11,000 megawatts of electricity by 2023 following the agreement the Nigerian government reached with German firm Siemens.  He said the German firm will be growing the present 3,400 megawatts to 7,000MW by the end of next year. Lai Mohammed added that they will then grow the megawatts to 1,000 megawatts by the end of 2023 (phase 2) and 25,000 megawatts in the third phase. The University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) says it has commenced mass production of face masks and hand sanitizers for use by students of the university. Dr Williams Wodi, the institution’s Deputy Registrar, Information, Publication and Public Relations, said in a statement on Saturday in Port Harcourt. According to Wodi, the medical kits were produced by the university’s Department of Fine Arts and Design in the Faculty of Humanities, to assist in the fight against COVID-19 pandemic. “The department produce customised face mask for staff and students of the institution to stem the rising cases of coronavirus pandemic in the society. “The face masks, made with high quality fabric, are designated with the logo of UNIPORT, to distinguish them from others in the market. “Similarly, the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences has also produced customised hand sanitizers for the university community,” he said. A runaway coronavirus positive case in Aba, Abia, has surrendered himself and members of his family to the Infectious Diseases Hospital (IDH), Aba, for management of his sickness. The Commissioner for Information in the state, Okeiyi Kalu, made the disclosure in a statement made available to newsmen in Aba on Saturday. The positive case was declared wanted on Thursday by the Abia Government, after he disappeared from a holding facility in Aba, having heard that he tested positive for coronavirus. Kalu said that the patient reported at the IDH by 8.05 a.m. on Saturday with his wife and other family members. He said that the state rapid response team ambulance had taken them to the State Specialist Hospital and Diagnostic Center, Amachara, Umuahia, for isolation and management. Abia State Government has released photos of the man who absconded from a holding facility in the state after testing positive for COVID-19. Emmanuel Ononiwu escaped from a holding facility in Aba just before he was to be moved to an isolation centre. He switched off his phone afterwards and also his wife has remained unreachable despite calls for her to present herself for a test. The Abia state government has now released photos of Ononiwu in a bid to recapture him and force him to go into isolation. Sharing photos of the COVID-19 patient, the Abia state government wrote: “Wanted Person: Emmanuel Ononiwu. Monkeys 'escape with COVID-19 samples' after attacking lab assistant

A gang of monkeys attacked a laboratory assistant and escaped with a batch of coronavirus blood test samples, it has been reported. The bizarre incident saw the troop of primates launch their assault near Meerut Medical College in Delhi, India. According to local media, the animals then snatched COVID-19 blood test samples that had been taken from three patients and fled. One of the monkeys was later spotted in a tree chewing one of the sample collection kits, the Times of India reported - adding that test samples from the patients had to be taken again. The undamaged kits were later recovered, the Meerut medical college superintendent, Dheeraj Raj, told AFP. He added: "They were still intact and we don't think there is any risk of contamination or spread." Kogi state commissioner for Information, Kingsley Fanwo has described the recent results released from the Nigerian Centre for Disease control as being”fraudulent.” In an interview with Channels TV, he questioned the results of NCDC, saying that it lacked cooperation with the state government and state ministry of health. He noted that the NCDC violated protocols and announced a case unknown to the state government. He stated that he communicated with the son of the index case, but all information given pointed that NCDC’s result is a ”fraud.” ” I am not one of those who think NCDC is helping this country, I think NCDC has an agenda to spread covid-19 to all states of the federation.” he said. Boko Haram member, Yahaya Adamu voluntarily surrenders to Nigerian Military

A member of the dreaded Boko Haram sect, Yahaya Adamu aka Saad Karami, has voluntarily surrendered to the Nigerian Army. A statement released by the Defence Headquarters on Friday,says Yahaya voluntarily surrendered to troops of 242 Battalion in Monguno on May 24. He is said to have led the last attack on troops in Baga town and equally participated in attacks on Metele, Mairari, Bindiram, Kangarwa and Shetimari (Niger Republic).  The defence head quarters stated that he surrendered as a result of the aggressive posture of the troops and artillery bombardments of terrorists’ suspected locations around the general area. FG reacts to death of Nigerian man killed in India

A Nigerian businessman, popularly called Sunny Mike, was beaten to death on Wednesday, May 27, at Palam, New Delhi, India. It was gathered that the businessman was accused of theft by an Indian lady which prompted passers-by to beat him till he passed out. By the time police arrived at the scene, he had died. His body was immediately moved to the morgue and friends and family members took to social media to demand justice.  The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) reacted to the death of a Nigerian man after he was brutally beaten in India. Reacting to Sunny Mike’s death, NIDCOM shared a video of his brutal beating and wrote: “Our attention has been drawn to above incident of a Nigerian brutally beaten up in Delhi, India. The Nigerian mission in India is aware and are currently investigating the circumstances. We call on Nigeria Community in India to be calm as the Mission is aware.”

The Federal Government has approved the dissolution of the Governing Councils of the University of Port Harcourt, Rivers State and the Nigerian Maritime University, Okerenkoko, in Delta State. The government announced the decision in a statement by the Director of Information, Federal Ministry of Education, Ben Bem-Goong, saying that the addition is with immediate effect. According to the Nation, the statement said: “A statement from the office of the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, today, said, the dissolution of the Governing Council of the two Universities takes immediate effect. “The Honourable Minister thanked members of the Governing Council for their service to the Institutions and wished them success in their future endeavours.” Details later
