Children’s Day: Plateau orphans mourn parents death

Plateau orphans on Wednesday lamented the brutal killings of their parents by unknown gunmen in the hitherto herdsmen farmers clashes that has claimed many lives in recent times.

The children numbering over 250, had the opportunity to express their grief in the local community of Miango, in Bassa Local Government Area of the State, when a Non-governmental organisation (NGO), known as International Committee On Nigeria (ICN), took out time to identify with the orphans, aimed at marking the auspicious celebration of Children’s Day.
Speaking at a mini event organise to give the orphans a sense of belonging, the National Correspondent ICN, Mr. Xhyongo Nebanat, said most of the children in the crisis pron communities have been neglected by not only government but by well meaning Nigerians.

Nebanat said children have been killed during crisis as well as their parents making them orphans and government do nothing to protect them.

According to him, “Children in Irigwe community are one of the most vulnerable, haven constantly being hit by farmers, herders clash. We are here to identify with them and give them hope.

“From January 2017 till date, 42 children of Irigwe nation were killed by gunmen suspected to be Fulani herdsmen, 646 are left orphans, 3148 left without food and shelter as they were burnt and destroyed by Fulani herdsmen.

“State parties realized that every child has the inherent right to life. All those involved in atrocities, war crimes and other human rights violations and abuses in Nigeria should be brought to justice in a fair trial.

“With all these attacks, government has not deem it fit to identify with them. We however call on the relevant authorities to mobilise and give these vulnerable children equal rights as their counterparts in the urban areas”, Nebanat said.
Our correspondent reports that eight communities in Bassa LGA, namely Rotsu, Ancha, Nkiedouro, Hukke, Jiri, Chinye, Miango central and the Hausa community benefited from the gesture of ICN where hand sanitizers, facemask, books and other items were distributed to the children as gifts for the celebration.
