NGO prepares for Edo election, campaigns for peace
Edolites on
their part have been apprehensive given the rancour that have characterized the
build up to the election as with other gubernatorial elections in Nigeria.
However, varied groups or organizations have put in efforts to squash the tension. Also, contesting party candidates have been made to reach a peace treaty which binds their supporters as well.
Governmental contributions have been felt in the form
of deployment of over 30,000 policemen for election duty in the state by the
IGP while INEC have since sensitized voters on proper conduct during election.
Also, a Non- Governmental Organizations,Connected Advocacy, which is known for Empowerment and Youth Development Initiative in collaboration with NDI and USAID have brought the "VOTE NOT FIGHT" campaign to forestall violence.
Their drive for a peaceful, violent free election have seen them take the campaign to the political gladiators who were spotted on camera in embrace of the campaign.
This campaign also took them to traditional and religious institutions.
Speaking to the Esan South LGA coordinator, Mr Reuben Osahon, he expressed optimism on a violent free election, stressing that the campaign have met the bossom of various actors involved in the election.
He cited the reception and words of the secretary to the palace of the monarch of the administrative headquarters of the LGA, Ubiaja, Prince Emma Obiyan as a beacon of hope for his optimism.
More so, he emphasized his vision recounting one of his team's meeting with
some youth stakeholders of political parties in which in one of the encounter, a
youth leader in one of the wards in the LGA by name Okhamhensan Lucky offered
oblation for a peaceful election.
Whether the
election would be a peaceful, violent free one like Osahon posited, it's still yet to be known. If we are to plant in the rains of the words of the
stakeholders just like him, then Edolites would have a "blissful"
election.
