Week-in-Review: Reactions of top trending stories for the past week
Events have occurred for the past week that have trended and also attracted a lot of reactions from Nigerians.
First, was the death of former governor of Oyo state, Abiola Ajimobi, who died at 70 after
battling with dreadful coronavirus disease.
Ajimobi died last week, Thursday (June 25, 2020) and buried
on Sunday (June 28, 2020).
His death attracted a lot of reactions from Nigerians,
especially when it served as an eye opener for some Nigerians who still don’t believe
of the existence of the coronavirus disease in Nigeria.
President Muhammadu Buhari in a statement by his Special
Adviser on Media and Publicity, hailed Ajimobi for his contributions to the
development of Oyo state and Nigeria in general.
Moving on from the sad demise of Ajimobi came the breaking
news of the arrest of internet fraudster and Instagram celebrity, Ramon
Olorunwa Abass, self-styled Hushpuppi.
Huspuppi and members of his gang were arrested while sleeping
at their Dubai residences. Dubai Police Media released a video of how the
fraudster was arrested last week.
The gang was responsible for Dh1.6 billion (about N169
billion) fraud involving over 1.9 million victims. Items worth N15.845 billion
(Dh 150 million) were also seized.
13 luxury cars worth N2. 640 billion (Dh 25 million), 21
laptops, 47 smartphones, 15 memory storage devices, 5 external hard drives and
800, 000 emails of potential victims were also recovered from the gang.
A lot of Nigerians reacted to his arrest but the most
striking comment SCB noted was that
of former Big Brother Naija star, Ifu Ennanda.
She wrote on her Instagram handle,“Leave that YahooYahoo
boyfriend before he brings you Yahoo Yahoo disgrace. Go and hustle clean and
make your own money, God will bless the work of your hands.”
Access bank was
dragged on the social media space for unnecessary deductions termed ‘’Stamp
duty charges’’ by their affected customers.
People abused the bank for unnecessarily deducting charges
at a period where the country is facing economic hardship as a result of the
pandemic.
However, the bank in a statement on Sunday, addressed the situation by offering to pay stamp duty charge for February to April on behalf of its customers. The management explained that the deductions were made as a result of the federal government directive.
A statement by the bank said deductions made between
Saturday and Sunday would be reversed to customers, adding that the bank
recognised that it is a tough period for customers.
On Thursday, June 25, 2020, the Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, emerged the flag bearer
of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) for the September gubernatorial election
in Edo State.
He was announced after ratification by party delegates
following the withdrawal of his main rival, Kenneth Imasuagbon.
With this development, Mr Obaseki will face his main rival,
Osagie Ize-Iyamu, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), at the
main election.
Reacting to this, PDP governors forum led by Sokoto state
governor, Aminu Tambuwal, congratulated Obaseki, saying his emergence of being
PDP governorship flagbearer was a testament to his leadership qualities.
Wrapping off last week’s review, I will end it by congratulating
Liverpool FC club for a well-deserved victory at this last season’s English
premier league.
Liverpool won the Premier League last Thursday without
breaking a sweat.
Chelsea’s victory over Manchester City handed the trophy to
Liverpool, which ended a 30-year title drought to cap the strangest of seasons.
Liverpool’s lead at the summit of the Premier League had
been first impressive, then daunting, then unimaginable. Now, at last, it was
insurmountable. For the first time since 1990, Liverpool was champion of
England.
