111 guests test positive for coronavirus after groom died two days after wedding
A relative said he had wished to
cancel the ceremony but his family had advised against it due to the ‘huge
financial losses’ it would cause. Bihar’s capital chief medical officer has now
confirmed that all the guests in attendance have been ‘identified and isolated’
after 111 people tested positive for the virus, most of whom were asymptomatic.
Raj Kishor Chaudhary said those who
also attended the groom’s funeral would need to self-isolate. Neither the bride
nor any of the groom’s relatives tested positive for the disease, he added.
It is thought around 300 people were
at the wedding and around 200 people attended the funeral.
An investigation has now been launched into social distancing violations at the two gatherings. Current restrictions in India only allow 50 guests at weddings, and 20 people at funerals.
The country has seen more than
17,000 people die with coronavirus, while at least 600,000 people have been
infected. Most businesses and other workplaces in India began reopening at the
start of June as the country ended its two month long lockdown.
Domestic flights have also resumed, while
hotels, restaurants, shopping malls and places of worship were given the green
light on June 8.
